23/5/2020 0 Comments New Recipe!Big thanks to Harry for sending in this delicious recipe for homemade chocolate banana ice-cream! Such a great idea and you will only need three ingredients- 50 mls of milk, a tablespoon of chocolate spread, and of course, 4 bananas! you may need an adult to help with chopping and the blender. Would be a great activity to try next week when hopefully the sun will make a return! Thanks Harry, can't wait to try it!

18/5/2020 0 Comments First CommunionAs you all know, Sunday the 24th May should have been the day you were making your First Communion. Like I said last time, it is not cancelled, it is only postponed and we will have a great day whenever it happens! Here is a message from our Bishop, Bishop Denis Nulty, to all the children in Ireland who should be celebrating their communion this month https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=284722092537437. So that we don’t forget how special this time is, I am including a booklet here with some activities for you to do. I will print out the pictures of Mary for the May altar and include them in the work pack for anyone who wants it. Hope you enjoy them!
18/5/2020 0 Comments Updated work!Hi Second Class!
Hope everyone is keeping safe and well, I cannot believe it is the 18th of May already! Before I say anything else, I have a very important announcement to make: Harry Ging is 9 years old!! Happy birthday Harry, hope you had a lovely day yesterday!! It was great to chat to you all last week, I loved hearing what you’ve been up to! I miss school and all of you, and that’s why it really makes my day when you send me work or pictures. I am going to put a little bit of work up now for the next two weeks, but I will add more on Thursday when you will have your books back! I know it was hard when I put up Busy at Maths work or Bua na Cainte and you maybe didn’t have the book, so it will be much easier for you from now on. At this stage, we have to accept that we won’t get to finish all of our books, but as always, we will do our best. Some people have sent in fabulous artwork, if you haven’t yet please do because I’d love to see it and add it to our class page here! I am so proud of you all for working hard at home- even if you don’t get all of the work done, stick with it and keep going, we are nearly at the end of the year- so keep it up! Remember to check back on Thursday to find out what else I’d like you to do, but for now, give this work a go- best of luck! Chat to you all soon, and have a lovely week! English: Spellings: Next 2 weeks, with test on Friday, let me know if you finish the book, I will supply you with extra spellings. Continue with My Read at Home as normal, let me know if you get the book finished! Sounds Good Phonics: look at the ‘ti’ pages 107-109. These are words where ‘ti; says sh like in fraction, and like si last week in mansion. So remember that if you are sounding out any words you don’t know. There are some big words on these pages, so you might need a little bit of help with the reading or with what the words mean. Do your best! Over the two weeks, if you come across more words in books with this sound, make a little list for yourself in your homework copy, and then next Friday, you might like to try a sound challenge like we do in school, let me know how you get on if you do! Starlight: Skip to Unit 7 and look at the two texts A Bear called Paddington, and the Magic Faraway tree. You may need a bit of help with the focus words so Don’t forget to ask for help or look up the words in a dictionary, it’s how you learn new things. Last week’s stories were instructions, this week both are narrative writing – telling a made up story. Please give the activities a go, including the writing activity about villains and superheroes. Let your imagination run wild!! James and the Giant Peach: I know some of you still haven’t finished watching the videos so I’ll give you another week to do so. I am including some activities in the work pack that I am giving out on Thursday but if you don’t want a work pack I will still pop the activities up here next week because you may want to do some. If you have reached the end of the book, I really hope you enjoyed the story. If you haven’t, I won’t give any spoilers!! Irish: Léigh sa Bhaile: These are the stories for the next two weeks, split them up however you like! p. 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74 Don’t forget to look at the foclóir box at the bottom of the page for help with the words. Any questions, let me know! Spellings: p.132 and 133 in Bua na Cainte. When you get the book back, you can do the activities on these pages. This week: orm (on me), ort (on you), air (on him), uirthi (on her) Next week: brón (sad- don’t forget the fada), áthas (happy) fearg (angry) tart (thirsty- pronounced tort) ocras (hungry) You use both sets of spellings together, for example Tá tart orm- I am thirsty Tá brón air- he is sad. You could practice making a few sentences with these, or with clothes ( Tá cóta uirthi) and send them to me, I would love to see them. I will give the next chapter in Bua na Cainte on Thursday when everyone gets their book. Some people do not have it at the moment so I’m just trying to be fair! Maths: I will give work from Busy at Maths on Thursday. It is a new chapter so I will have videos of me teaching it to show you how to do the activities in the book. Mental Maths: continue as you have been. Tables: this week you are onto going back over 7 and 8, and next week it will be 9 and 10. As you probable remember- 10 are so easy, and for the 9, add a 10 then jump back one- simple!! Keep practicing the wheel to see how quickly you can do it, remember all our tricks, and most importantly, get someone to test you!! Religion: I will give work from Grow in Love when the books are collected. May is the month of Mary, who as you know is the mother of Jesus! Maybe you could turn your sacred space at home into a May altar for Mary, with some flowers, rosary beads, candles, and say the Hail Mary there every day. Small World: p 73-77 All About Africa In this section you will learn about 1. Animals called wildebeest which live in Africa 2. A traditional African story that has been told for many years, a bit like how we have all been telling the story of Tír na nÓg in Ireland. 3. A study on Ethiopia, which is a country in Africa. Before this we have learned about France and Spain, which are in Europe, we learned about China which is in Asia, and now we are learning about Africa. You might remember that the Sahara desert is in Africa. If you want to learn more about wildebeest, you can do a google image search of them, and then check out this short video clip about them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzgI-1ArLb4. On a map of the world, find Ethiopia. See what countries touch it, and look at how far we would have to fly to get there. What countries would we cross? If you want to learn more, google ‘Ethiopia facts for kids’. Music: To follow on with our theme of Africa in Small World, there is a song I want you to learn called Umbayalo. Just to warn you, you might laugh the first time you hear it, but this is SO catchy!!. This is an African call-and-response song, you’ll get the hang of it quickly ! I love African drums in the background. Once you know it well, ask your Mam or dad to take a video of you singing it so you can hear how it sounds. Singing with you all is one of the parts I miss most about school, so I hope you enjoy it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxQOjRallEs this version has a teacher singing with kids responding. Listen to this one first to learn the words and the tune! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lnIhEtOUVA this version just has a girl singing and you must respond to her! Do this one when you are getting good at it! PE: Apart from playing outside, why not give GoNoodle a go this week, once you have a dance learned off, get someone else at home involved- your brother, sister, or even Mammy or Daddy! If you get really good at one, send me a quick video clip so I can see your moves! 12/5/2020 0 Comments Great weather, great art! Here are a few of the fabulous pictures that were sent into me over the past week. They all remind me so much of summer with their bright colours! Thanks to Jamie, Tina, Donnacha, Rioghan and Kate, and if you haven't sent one in yet, why not get drawing!! I'd love to see them! I'll keep adding to the website and share your work with everyone! Some people sent other brilliant drawings to me and I'll add them to the page also.
5/5/2020 0 Comments James and the Giant PeachHi again!
In the post with your work for the next 2 weeks, I mentioned James and the Giant Peach, and how I would like you to follow the story being read aloud on Youtube. The videos I have picked are quite handy because, if you remember, the book has over 30 chapters, all of which are quite short. The videos split the book up into 7 parts, and you can read the pages on the screen as the lady reads it out loud. Each video is around 20 minutes long, so it stops you getting bored. At the end of each day, it would be a really good idea to write a little summary of what happened in those chapters, what the highlights were, if there were any sad/funny/scary parts. You could listen to one video each day and you would have the book finished in a week! Give it a go and let me know how you get on, enjoy!! Hope you are all well and had a lovely long weekend. It’s May now which means, number 1, Mason is now 9 years old (Happy Birthday Mason!!!) and number 2, it’s officially the summer, which you’ll know from the gorgeous weather we’ve been having! I hope you are all getting out and enjoying the sunshine, Youtube and your Xbox will be there in the winter! I have been loving all the emails, photos, videos and messages I have been getting from you the last few weeks. I’m really missing school and chatting to you all so I love hearing from ye. I have seen all the work that has been done at home so far and I am so impressed with you all. I know it’s not easy doing work at home, and that your families are all really busy, so do as much as you can and don’t worry if there are things you have to leave out or can’t do for any reason, I completely understand. I have put all the work for the next two weeks in one file, click on the link below to find it. If you don’t have the book home with you, don’t worry, as the books are all online and I will put details in the file on how your parents can find them on the publishers’ websites. On these sites, you will find lots of other 2nd class books that are used in other schools, so you might like to take a look at those, for example, if you have read all the stories in Starlight or Read at Home, you might like to see other English books and read their stories for a change. The work I am putting below should keep you busy for the next two weeks, but if you fly through it all, you might want to email me and I can suggest other activities. Before I finish, I just want to say that I know you all probably very sad about the Communion being cancelled, because I know I am. It was going to be a big day for you and I know that you have been looking forward to it all year. Please remember this: it is not cancelled forever! The rules at the moment are there to keep us all safe, we might not like them all the time, and you might think it’s unfair, but we all want our families to be safe and healthy so we have to follow the rules. You have made your First Penance, and you WILL make your First Communion when it’s safe to do, and it will be even more special, and will be an amazing celebration! It gives us something to look forward to when all of this is over. Best of luck with the work in the file. If you have any questions, need help, want me to correct anything, or just want to say hi, send me an email. Chat to you all soon! Ms. P
23/4/2020 0 Comments April 23rd, 2020 Our recipe collection is growing! Today, Donnacha share with us how he made his delicious apple crumble, great instructions that we could all try at home. Thanks Donnacha!
22/4/2020 0 Comments April 22nd, 2020Here's a tasty recipe for you all to try, thanks so much to Cillian for sending it to me! Very clear instructions, well done!
22/4/2020 0 Comments Recipes!Forgot to add these recipes the other day, they would be a good way of using up any leftover Easter eggs (that's if any have survived!) The flapjacks are plain in the recipe but you could ask chocolate chips, or a layer of melted chocolate on top at the end. The Mars bars ones are really delicious! As always, when you are following a recipe, don't forget to have a grown up help you with things like melting or cutting. Have fun and enjoy, If you have any other easy recipes that you like to make at home, why not send them to me on the school email and I will add them to this page so others can try! 21/4/2020 0 Comments A Quick Update!Hi Second Class!
Hope you all had a brilliant Easter, and ate a ridiculous amount of eggs! I had way too many! I used the leftover chocolate to do a little baking, I made chocolate flapjacks, maybe you could do the same! You could write up a recipe for whatever you make, take pictures of the yummy things you make and send them to me, I'd love to see them! I'm going to leave some work below to keep you busy for the next two weeks, so please don't think that you need to get this all done in a few days. Spread it out and do a little bit of each subject every day, the way we do it in school. If you find something too tricky, or you don't have the book home with you, that is no problem so don't worry a bit about that. Don't worry about which copy to write things in either, I won't mind at all! This is all very strange and there is no right or wrong way to do any of this so don't worry. I would love if you could ask your Mam or Dad to send me photos or write to me to tell me how ye are getting on, I would love to hear from you all. You can also send me questions about the work, or ask for help if you are finding something difficult, I'm here to help. Don't forget also to make the most of the lovely weather and get out and play and get some exercise, that's just as important as this school work! Hope to see you all soon and miss you all loads! Ms. Parkinson
3. If you have Sounds Good Phonics at home, look at the CH pages starting on 101. These are words where 'ch' make the hard 'k' sound, so remember that if you are sounding out any words you don;t know. You might need some help with these pages but do as much as you can from the three pages. 4.The next unit in Starlight has two very interesting topics- The Sahara Desert , and The Arctic and Antarctica. It's great to learn about animals that live in completely different places to us. Again, you might need some help with the focus words, so ask someone at home or try to do it by yourself by using a dictionary! You can also give the activities a go. Check out some of these videos about the desert, and facts about arctic animals like polar bears and penguins! Do some research of your own too and look up images of each of the animals mentioned!
Irish; Léigh sa Bhaile: I have picked some stories where you will know most of the words and this will help you to do the questions. Don't forget also to look at the little dictionary at the bottom of the page for help too! the pages I have picked are 49, 50, 52, 53, 55. You can split these up whichever way you like! For Irish spellings, if you have Bua Na cainte, it's on p.130 so you can do the activities. If you don't have the book the words for this week are aon, dó, trí, ceathair, and cúig and next week sé, seacht, ocht, naoi and deich. Practice them and you can add them to your spelling test if you like! The topic for the next two weeks is hobbies or Caitheamh Aimsire. It starts in the book on p.48, or if you don;t have the book, you can check out this topic on Twinkl (look back at my earlier posts for help on how to sign up to Twinkl). Try to do as much of it as you are able to. You will know a lot of the words already but here are some you might not know: ag dreapadh (climbing) ag sleamhnú (sliding) ag luascadh (swinging), ag iomáint (hurling) ag tiomáint (driving). A good activity for this chapter is to play Deir Ó' Grádaigh at home (Simon Says). Do your best with the Irish! Small World: I think most of you brought these books home. The pages we are going to look at this week are about hospitals; looking at the inside of a hospital ward and how hospitals have changed over the years. If you are talking to your grandparents on the phone or on video call, you could ask them if they remember any differences in hospitals when they were young. The pages in the book are 67,68 and 69. Next week's pages are all about the butterfly. Like the frog, the butterfly goes through many changes as it grows, and looks very different at each stage. Check out the pages on 81 and 82. I'd like you to do some research of your own. Google different types of species of butterfly, see the different colours they can be, and draw a picture of your favourite one. Find out the difference between butterflies and moths. Find out how they eat and what they eat. Find out how long it takes to go from an egg to a fully gown butterfly. Find out the names of 10 different types of butterlies, and which ones we would see in Ireland. Find out about the parts of their body. Find out how long they usually live for. When you find out all of this, why not pit all together with some drawings and make a project all about butterflies! I would love to see it if you do. Best of luck everyone, and remember, just do as much as you can and let me know if you have any questions or need any help! :=) |
